The Chicago Cubs have signed catcher Carlos Perez to a minor league contract. It includes an invite to spring training.

Perez , 34, has spent parts of five seasons in the majors.

He was originally signed as an international free agent out of Venezuela by the Toronto Blue Jays all the way back in 2008.

He doesn't hit for a ton of power, but he had a 396. OBP with low A- Auburn.

The Blue Jays included him in a massive 10 player deal with the Houston Astros that saw J.A. Happ, Brandon Lyon, and David Carpenter come to Toronto with, among others, former number one draft pick Joe Musgrove going the other way.

Perez has had mixed success since making his debut with the Angels back in 2015. For his career he has a .226/.29./.357 slash line with an OPS+ of 83. However, in his most recent season in the majors with Oakland he had a wRC of -4.

While those numbers don't exactly inspire confidence, catching depth is always at a premium and Perez could find himself the next man up behind the Cubs tandem of Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya.

Fun fact, there is another Carlos Perez who is a catcher in major league baseball. The other Carlos Perez happens to be this Carlos Perez brother.

Perez the younger, the one who didn't sign with the Cubs, has played a total of 34 games for the Chicago White Sox, spread across two seasons.
