Pete Alonso is staying put. After months of back-and-forth negotiations, the All-Star first baseman has re-signed with the New York Mets on a two-year, $54MM deal.
The Blue Jays were rumoured to be finalists for Alonso's services and allegedly had a six-year offer on the table, though those reports were unconfirmed.
Instead, Alonso will return to Queens, staying with the only team he has known.
The contract terms are lower than initially expected. Coming off a down year, the Mets' reluctance to commit to a long-term deal was understandable, with owner Steve Cohen hesitant to go that route.
The deal is front-loaded, with Alonso set to receive $30MM in year one and $24MM in 2026. Additionally, it includes an opt-out after the first year.
It was one of two offers from the Mets, with the other being a three-year, $70MM proposal. In the end, Alonso bet on himself and chose the shorter-term deal with the higher first-year salary.
The failure to land Alonso, even if the chances were slim, will likely reignite the false narrative about the Blue Jays' front office being unwilling or unable to spend big and sign marquee players.
With Alonso off the market, Alex Bregman is arguably the biggest name still available.
The Blue Jays have been in discussions and reportedly have made an offer, though the Detroit Tigers now appear to be the favourites to land the All-Star third baseman.
