Jansen, who was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2013 and spent parts of seven seasons with the big league club, was traded to the Boston Red Sox near the trade deadline last year, as the Jays entered a re-build.
While with the Sox, Jansen became the first player in Major League history to play for two teams in the same game. The game, between the Red Sox and the Jays, started on June 26 when Jansen was a member of the Blue Jays, was suspended and resumed two months later, with Jansen now playing for Boston.
Jansen's deal with Tampa is for one year, $8.5 million, pending a physical. It also includes a $500 000 buyout for 2026.
MLB insider and FanSided contributor Robert Murray first reported on the deal.
As Murray states, Jansen had reportedly received several multi-year offers but chose to bet on himself and took a one-year deal with Tampa after a down season last year.
No word on if the Blue Jays were amongst the teams that had put forth an offer.
Another reason why Jansen chose the Rays, is that he will get consistent playing time.
While with the Blue Jays, he was effectively «1A» in a catching tandem with Alejandro Kirk, but struggled to healthy.
The injury-prone catcher has not played more than 100 games since 2019, and more than 80 only twice since then.
Jansen appeared in 62 games last year for the Blue Jays, and 30 more after being traded to the Red Sox.
While this is certainly disappointing news for Jays fans, many of whom were hoping for a reunion with the long-time star, Danny Jansen should get a big reception when he returns to Rogers Centre with the Rays in May.
