In 2022, the Yankees superstar was heading into his walk year, about to become a free agent for the first time in his career, and there was understandably much speculation about where he might end up.
Judge proceeded to have one of the best seasons in modern history on route to breaking the American League Home Run record. After being courted by both the Giants and the Padres, both teams from his native California, he ultimately agreed to stay in pinstripes for the next decade, reportedly taking less money to stay with the Yankees.
Recently, Blue Jays insider Keegan Matheson suggested that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. might do something similar.
While many fans are clamouring for a long-term deal before the season starts, both sides may end up deciding to wait. Vladdy would love to test the market and the Blue Jays would be able gauge the offers coming in.
While Vladdy is certain to get more than Judge's nine year $360MM contract that was signed prior to the 2023 season, Guerrero could also take a home town discount.
There are other similarities between the two as well. Prior to the 2023 season, Judge turned down a seven-year extension worth $213.5MM. Judge and the Yankees also avoided salary arbitration, although much later in the season, with Judge agreeing to a $19MM salary, plus bonus and incentives, for the remainder of the year. We all know what happened next.
So even if Vladdy doesn't sign an extension prior to opening day, something that is becoming increasingly likely, there is still a good chance that he remains a Blue Jay beyond next season. Just ask the Yankees.
