If no one minds, Jeff Hoffman would like a Clay Holmes-style contract. Please and thank you.

The former 1st round draft pick by the Toronto Blue Jays and 2024 All-Star with the Philadelphia Phillies, is seeking a deal similar to the three-year, $38MM one Holmes signed in December.

While the market for starting pitching has been moving along, it's been a little slower for relievers. Although Hoffman was a star out of the pen last year for Philly, much like Holmes, he is drawing interest as a starter, something he is clearly amenable to.

Drafted by the Blue Jays, Hoffman was traded to Colorado in 2015 as part of the blockbuster deal that saw Troy Tulowitzki come to Toronto.

Hoffman has started in the past, accumulating 38 starts across four seasons with the Rockies and another 12 in his two years with Cincinnati.

He has been exclusively a reliever with Philadelphia and has found greater success pitching out of the bullpen.

While some might be surprised at Hoffman's self-comparison to Holmes, while Holmes has a longer track record of success, most metrics suggest Hoffman has been the better pitcher since he broke out as a high-leverage reliever partway through the 2023 campaign. in particular, he's coming off a stronger 2024 season in almost every single statistical category, including strikeout rate, walk rate, innings pitched, ERA, SIERA, and all versions of WAR.

While Hoffman has been weighing his options, it appears unlikely he will return to Philadelphia, who recently signed former Jays closer Jordan Romano.

It's not clear exactly which teams have been courting Hoffman, but he should be able to sign a contract before the season starts.
