An emotional Freddie Freeman explains why he plays for Team Canada.
Being given the opportunity to represent your country playing the game you love is an opportunity any player would dream of, but for Freddie Freeman, the reason is heartfelt and sentimental.
Born and raised in Orange County, Calif., Freddie Freeman holds dual citizenship through his Canadian-born parents.
His mother, Rosemary, was from Peterborough, Ont., and met his father, Frederick, in Windsor, Ont., before the couple moved to California and had Freddie and his two older brothers.
Rosemary died of skin cancer in 2000, when Freddie was 10. After playing internationally for the United States when he was younger, Freddie decided to switch to Team Canada for the 2017 World Baseball Classic in honor of his mother.

"I think even if I hit zero every single season, I think she'd still be proud of me. It's hard to even still think about. That's going to get me emotional. I just hope she's proud of me; 23 years, it never goes away. That's all I want. I hope she's smiling down."
Clearly Freeman sees a great importance in honoring his mother while he plays the game of baseball which shows the true great person he is even outside of baseball.
