It was October 17th, 1992. Game one of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the hometown Atlanta Braves was about to begin.

To throw the ceremonial first pitch? A beloved figure in Georgia. A man, renowned for philanthropy and commitment to racial justice and someone who a hug Braves fan. Former President Jimmy Carter. Other than Hank Aaron, Carter may have been the most revered figure in the state of Georgia.

The former President passed away today at the age of 100..

President Carter was a huge sports fan and was passionate about the game of baseball. He loved the Braves. Two of his favourites were Dale Murphy and Terry Pendleton. He loved watching the games; even when he entered hospice care two years ago.

John Moores, former principal owner of the San Diego Padres was good friends with Carter, recalling their friendly feuds whenever their two teams were playing. Moores called him, quite simply:

the greatest man I have ever known. - Former Padres owner John Moores on Jimmy Carter

The 1992 world series was iconic for so many reasons. First Canadian team, first world series game in Canada. The game one Hall Of Fame matchup between Jack Morris and Tom Glavine. It doesn't get more iconic than that. Unless of course you bring out a former president to throw out the first pitch. It is said he great form.

While the Blue Jays ultimately won the series four games to two, Jimmy Carter was back at it again three years later throwing another first pitch for a World Series game between Atlanta and Cleveland. He truly was a baseball man.
