Toronto Blue Jays fans react to the lack of movement on Vladimir Guerrero Jr's extension. With only one week left on Guerrero's self imposed deadline (Feb 18th) will this be the last season we see the face of the franchise in a Blue Jays uniform?
The 25-year-old star has said he won't negotiate beyond the start of spring training.
We should get an early answer, if Guerrero holds to a deadline here, but nothing else in Blue Jays camp will compare to the magnitude of this decision.
The Blue Jays have put together a nice offseason, but extending Guerrero would immediately reset this franchise's competitive window and reignite a fan base that has stuck by this organization despite the lack of a postseason win since 2016.
If camp gets rolling and Guerrero still hasn't put pen to paper, then every conversation we have about this team going forward will be tied to that for the next year.
We have heard reports that Guerrero will sign a deal before spring training, but those reports come into question each day that goes by.
Signing Guerrero would be the ultimate capper and would go a long way toward turning around this fanbase.
Guerrero is coming off a great year for the Blue Jays in which he hit .323 with 30 homers and 103 RBI. He made his fourth All-Star Game and finished sixth in the American League MVP voting.
The Blue Jays finished last in the American League East at 74-88, but should figure to be better with the new additions in the fold.
Like I mentioned before if Guerrero doesn't get a deal done, his contract situation will be a looming story line all season long and could become a distraction.
To an extent the same could be said about Bo Bichette.
Bichette was one of the league's best middle infielders since he debuted in 2019.
He'd hit above .290 and reached 20 homers in each of his first three full seasons. Bichette went into the '24 campaign with a career .299/.340/.487 slash line in more than 2300 plate appearances.
Bo garnered down ballot MVP votes each year between 2021-23.
He's coming off a dismal .225/.277/.322 showing over 336 plate appearances.
He landed on the injured list three times and only appeared in half the team's games.
A pair of right calf strains were the biggest issue. He also broke his right middle finger late in the year and required minor surgery.
Bichette is also in the final year of his contract and his future will be similarly discussed, creating another distraction throughout the 2025 season.
At the very least Ross Atkins needs to get an extension with Vladdy done to retain this fanbase, and quiet the white noise of Guerrero and Bichette's future in Toronto going into the 2025 season.
