It didn't seem that long ago when the troika of three sons of former stars were poised to do great things at the big league level.
Along with shortstop Bo Bichette, son of Dante, and first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., son of a Hall of Fame outfielder with the same name, Biggio was once considered part of a three-headed monster that bring a world championship back to Toronto for the first time since 1993.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio plowed their way through the minor leagues with ease.
And when they made their big league debuts, none of them disappointed.
All three seemed to be big pieces of the Toronto Blue Jays franchise and the future looked very bright.
A 6'2" left-handed hitter, Biggio finished fifth in voting for American League Rookie of the Year in 2019 when he had 16 homers and 14 stolen bases while playing 100 games.
After Biggio's rookie campaign he started to tail off dramatically, while Guerrero Jr and Bo Bichette flourished at the big league level.
Cavan Biggio never reached double digits in homers or even had as many as 70 hits in a season since then.
While his defensive metrics were above average, and could play multiple positions well, Biggio batted .227 with 77 doubles, four triples, 48 home runs, 176 runs batted in over 490 major-league games with Toronto.
After 6 underwhelming seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, Ross Atkins traded Biggio to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor-league pitcher Braydon Fisher.
A sad end to a once promising future in Toronto.
A new change of scenery was thought to be a good thing for Biggio but his performance remained par for the course.
Once the Dodgers signed Freddie Freeman to a 6 year , $162,000,000 contract, Biggio's days were numbered.
The Dodgers then released Biggio after he hit .197/.316/.306 in limited plate appearances.
That's when the San Francisco Giants came knocking and signed Cavan Biggio to a minor league deal.
Then the San Francisco Giants traded him to the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations.
After the trade deadline, Biggio was optioned to Triple-A upon the return of Ozzie Albies.
Biggio cleared waivers before rejecting an outright assignment from the Braves.
On November 1st Cavan Biggio elected to leave the Atlanta Braves and enter free agency.
Now that Cavan Biggio is a free agent for the first time in his career, do you think he will get signed to a big league deal? Will any of the 30 teams take a flyer on him?
Or will he have to settle for another minor league deal and work his way back?
Where ever he ends up I wish nothing but the best of luck to him, after a really tough season and 4 teams in 2024, he definitely deserves a look.
Perhaps his Hall of Fame father will bring him home to Houston and give him a shot.
If Ross Atkins cannot extend Guerrero or Bichette it may be the end of a once promising era in Toronto, as all three players will be somewhere else.
