A.J. Burnett may have been the world's unluckiest pitcher.

The oft-injured All-star former pitcher, who turns 48 today, was no stranger to injuries, missing significant time in several seasons.

Some of these were normal: arm soreness, Tommy John surgery, fatigue.

Some however, were downright wacky.

While with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Burnett bunted a ball off his face and he had to go sit on the bench and think about his life for a while.

There was a time, while with the New York Yankees, where he injured BOTH hands by slamming them into the clubhouse door.. I'm sure that sat great with George Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman.

His three year stint with the Toronto Blue Jays wasn't immune to oddities either.

Just before the start of the 2008 season, Burnett caught his index finger in the door of his car while shutting it. The door partially ripped his nail off. Burnett had to be sidelined, which meant he had time to think about what he'd done.

A.J. Burnett only spent three seasons with the Blue Jays, opting out of a five year contract after the 2008 season. Yet he was successful, going a combined a 38-26. In his final season, he led the league in both starts - 34 - and strikeouts with 231.

But we will always remember the finger.

Happy birthday Allan James Burnett!
