The current GM has one year left on his contract, and while he has some success - four playoff appearances in nine seasons, the post-season disappointments coupled with his failure to sign any megastars and his sometime cryptic PR statements have not made Atkins many fans.
And while his tenure in Toronto has been far from a write-off, the acquisitions of both Robbie Ray and Marcus Semien have showed that sometimes his gambling pays off, it hasn't gone the way Atkins and President Mark Shapiro would have liked, especially after the 2021 season.
Shapiro might be hesitant to part ways with his long-time colleague Atkins, but if he does, the Blue Jays may already have their General Manager waiting in-house: Tony LaCava.
LaCava has been with the Blue Jays since 2002, when he was hired as assistant to then-General Manager J.P. Ricciardi.
In 2007 he has named as assistant GM and in 2009, new General Manager Alex Anthopoulos gave him the additional title of director of player development.
LaCava does some have previous GM experience too, however brief.
After Anthopoulos left the team after the 2015 season, LaCava was named General Manager on in interim basis.
Once the Blues Jays hired Ross Atkins, LaCava stayed on and was promoted to senior vice president of baseball operations and assistant general manager.
LaCava is well-liked by the Jays organization and is also extremely loyal.
He once turned down an opportunity to be the General Manager of the Baltimore Orioles in order to stay with the Blue Jays.
Not only is he respected in Toronto, but he has a good reputation around the league as well.
Who knows how the Blue Jays will do in 2025. If things don't go Ross Atkins way, the Blue Jays would be wise to give LaCava a shot.
