Days after it was announced that beloved former catcher Danny Jansen had signed a one-year deal with division rival Tampa Bay, it would now appear that the Jays All-Star closer will also not be back.
Romano has signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
ESPN's Jeff Passan was the first to report on the deal, which is pending a physical.
Romano was non-tendered by the Blue Jays this fall after missing most of last season with an elbow injury.
At the time, Atkins said it was a very difficult decision and that he still hoped for a reunion.
According to Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal, the one year deal is worth more than the $7.75 million Romano was expected to make in arbitration from the Blue Jays. It is unknown what the exact amount is.
Romano, who was once selected by the Texas Rangers as Rule 5 pick only to be returned to the Jays, leaves his hometown team as a two-time All Star who is third all time in saves.
Currently at 105 career saves, He trails only legends Duane Ward and Tom Henke.
Romano went 1-2 with a 6.59 ERA and eight saves in only fifteen games last year before being shut down with elbow troubles.
In 2022-2023 he went a combined 10-11, with a 2.50 ERA and 72 saves. He was an All-Star both seasons, although he did not make an appearance in the 2022 mid-summer classic.
In 2021, he went 23/24 in save opportunities, for a 95.8 save percentage, which was the highest in the AL, and second in all of MLB, trailing only Josh Hader.
While Chad Green filled in admirably for Romano last year and is a more than capable replacement, this will certainly be another blow for Blue Jays fans were hoping to see the well-liked closer back in blue and white in 2025.
The deal has been officially or finalized by the Phillies.
