On Sunday, FanDuel released their over/under numbers and the Blue Jays are listed at 76.5 wins. It is the lowest projection for the American League East. Unsurprisingly, the Dodgers rank the highest with 103.5 while the White Sox are at the bottom of the list, coming in at 51.1 The New York Yankees top the AL East with 93.5
It should be mentioned however, that these projections were released prior to the Jays' announced deal with Anthony Santander While the Jays still want to add, it will be interesting to see what the updated numbers are as the start of the MLB season gets closer and closer.
Even with Santander now joining the Blue Jays, it makes sense why projections and expectations are low for the Blue Jays. Their bullpen was a disaster last year and their offence scuffled, with only Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hitting more than 20 home runs.
While the Blue Jays have taken major steps to address their bullpen issues, reeling in Jeff Hoffman, Nick Sandlin, Josh Walker, and reuniting with Yimi Garcia, the health and effectiveness of relievers is notoriously fickle and volatile.
In spite of the projections though, there are some reasons for optimism. One is the return of Bo Bichette who, after missing much of 2024 with injuries, looks to return to his All-Star form. Another is the acquisition of Andres Gimenez, who looks to shore up 2nd base with his Gold Glove winning abilities. The 2nd half of 2024 also saw an extended return to form by Alejandro Kirk.
Toronto has also been connected to another free agents including Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, Carlos Estevez, and Jurickson Profar. Any one of these players would help out the Blue Jays and could take them from a sub-500 win team, to one that could win 85-90 games.
Spring Training begins on February 12.
