The toughest part of Spring Training is telling players that they won't be making the team. With four players currently out-of-options for the Blue Jays, those conversations could be extra difficult this year.
Out of the four, Clement seems the only surefire one to make the team as he coming off a break-out season in which was nominated for a Gold Glove. He'll be given every opportunity to win the everyday third base job, but even if regresses, he'll see some time and 2nd and possibly short.
Tyler Heineman served admirably as Alejandro Kirk's back-up following the trade of Danny Jansen at the trade deadline last year. His offence wasn't great however, getting only one hit in ten at-bats.
The Blue Jays have five other catchers coming to camp, including veteran Christian Bethancourt and top prospect Phil Clarke. If Bethancourt performs, Heineman could be a DFA option.
Then there are Nance and Pop. The two relievers will battling alongside Ryan Burr and https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/walkejo03.shtml for the final spot in the Blue Jays bullpen. While both Burr and Walker have options, the latter is a lefty, which good give him an edge.
The prognosticators seems to favour Nance over Pop. It's also possible that neither of them make it. The Blue Jays could sign another reliever or someone from camp could surprise and force his way onto the team.
Even if Brendon Little gets hurt or has a disastrous Spring, the Blue Jays would still want to carry a lefty, which would open a door for Walker or perhaps Mason Fluharty.
This will be a decision that could come down to the last day of camp.
