Horwitz, Mitchell to Cleveland as Trade For Gimenez Finalized
The Toronto Blue Jays will have a new 2nd baseman in 2025.
Jeff Passan and Ken Rosenthal both broke news that Toronto acquired All-Star Gold Glove 2nd baseman Andres Gimenez from the Cleveland Guardians.
Jays reporter Keegan Matheson now has the full details of the trade which include RHP Nick Sandlin coming to Toronto along with Gimenez, while 1B/2B Spencer Horwitz and minor-league OF Nick Mitchell are headed to Cleveland.

Gimenez broke out with the Guardians in 2022, after being in acquired in the deal that sent Francisco Lindor to the New York Mets. He was an All-Star and has won three consecutive Gold Gloves, setting up the Blue Jays to be an elite defensive team and pairing nicely with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Ernie Clement,
Gimenez can also run the bases well, having stolen 30 last year. While he had a down-year offensively in 2024, he did hit 17 home runs in 2022.
Sandlin appeared in 68 games for Cleveland last year, and figures to slide into a middle relief role with the Jays.
The Blue Jays were high on Horwitz who broke out with 12 home runs last year after making his debut during the 2023 season. Initially a 1st baseman, he was given more playing time at 2nd base as the season went on.
Given the Blue Jays dearth of middle infielders however, Horwitz was a likely candidate to be dealt, given his below average defensive metrics.
Nick Mitchell is a minor league outfielder who hit .289. with four home runs in 22 games for the Dunedin Blue Jays last year.
While the Blue Jays still have too many middle infielders, Gimenez is a serious upgrade and could be a game-changer this coming season.
