Continuing their trend of signing every player in the known universe, the Dodgers have agreed to a minor league contract with pitcher Julian Fernandez.
The deal, which includes an invite to spring training, was first reported by Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
Fernandez last appeared in the big leagues in 2021 with the Colorado Rockies, where had a 10.80 ERA in just six games.
Fernandez was originally by the Rockies as an international free agent in 2012. He made his debut the following year. After spent the next few years honing his craft before reaching High-A Asheville in 2017.
After the 2017 season, he was left unprotected and claimed by the San Francisco Giants in that year's Rule 5 Draft. However he never appeared for them after undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing the 2018 season.
He was then claimed by the Miami Marlins before finding his way back to Colorado and making his Major League debut.
After being picked up by the Blue Jays after the 2022 season, he started the year with Triple A Buffalo. Fernandez struggled to find his form, limping to a 10.61 ERA in 9 2/3 innings across seven games. He was He was released by the Blue Jays on May 25th without receiving a call up to the big leagues.
Most recently, Fernandez appeared with Él Aguila de Veracruz of the Mexican League. He had some success here, going 1-1 with a 1.82 ERA and 19 saves in 34 games.
With the Dodgers currently stacked, Fernandez is a long a shot to make the team out of spring training. Perhaps though, this will be his ticket back to the majors.
