The Blue Jays, who had a one-in-five shot of landing the top overall pick, slid down a few notches but still found themselves within the top ten overall.
While this likely takes them out of the running for top prospect Ethan Holliday (son of Matt and younger brother of Jackson), there are still plenty of promising youngsters to choose from.
In his mock 2025 draft after the lottery results were announced, MLB.com's Jim Callis had the Jays selecting Xavier Neyens, a third baseman out of Mt. Vernon High school in Washington State.
Neyens' main attraction is his bat. He is profiled to be a potentially elite hitter from the left side of the plate and recently added extra power to his swing, which already has a great approach, helped make the jump in status.
He does have a high swing-and-miss rate though, and at 6'4 is big for a third baseman.
The Jays could also pick someone like Kayson Cunningham, a speedy short stop from Texas Prep, or perhaps they will go with Kruz Schoolcraft, a two-way first baseman/pitcher from Oregon who stands a towering 6'8.
Other good fits for the Blue Jays, should they be available, are RHP Seth Hernandez, SS/RHP Billy Carlson, and catcher Luke Stevenson.
The Blue Jays have never had the first overall pick.
Their highest selection has been #2, which they have had three times - Lloyd Moseby in 1978, Garry Harris in 1980, and Augie Schmidt in 1982.
Other notable 1st round picks for the Blue Jays include Marcus Stroman, Joe Musgrove, James Paxton, Aaron Hill, and Vernon Wells.
Last year, in the 2024 Draft, the Blue Jays had the 20th overall pick which they used on pitcher Trey Yesavage.
The Washington Nationals have the first overall pick, followed by the Los Angeles Angels. The Mariners, Rockies, and Cardinals round out the Top 5.
