As the self-imposed draws nearer, the rumours surrounding Vlad only increase; now this is starting to include trade talks.
While earlier stories reported on the New York Mets interest in the Blue Jays first baseman, Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer has proposed a few alternatives. One such team is the San Diego Padres.
Now while Rymer stresses that this a highly unlikely scenario, it should be noted that if anybody can pull off a surprising blockbuster trade it's Padres GM AJ Preller. This was the guy who traded for Juan Soto and then dealt him again a year later.
However the trade that Rymer proposes seems to be underplay Vladdy. The Blue Jays have said they would only accept a large haul for the face of their franchise and Rymer's hypothetical seems to come up short.
So what is the trade?
In Rymer's world the Padres receive Guerrero in exchange for infielder Jake Cronenworth, LHP Yuki Matsui, and top prospect Leodalis De Vries. That's it.
While Cronenworth is a two-time All-Star who can play multiple positions, including first base, and was on Toronto's radar last offseason, and Matsui was a star in Japan, this doesn't feel like the type of deal the Blue Jays would go for.
Rymer acknowledges as much.
Still a trade of Guerrero to someone is not entirely out of the question.
The extension deadline is February 17th.
