The 28 year old hard throwing lefty spent his entire career with the Cards and Jays.
Cabrera turned in 62 2/3 innings of 3.59 ERA last season for Toronto, but had a below-average 18.5% strikeout rate and bloated 10.7% walk rate.
Pitching command has always been an issue for Cabrera, who's never walked fewer than 10% of his opponents in a single season.
A lot of Blue Jays fans scoffed at the idea of Toronto letting him go but maybe Toronto pitching coach Pete Walker knew something us fans did not.
While in Toronto Cabrera featured a career-low average in velocity on his four-seam fastball (95.9 mph), though his 96 mph average sinker was up some from his 2022-23 levels (but down from a 97.7 mph peak). His 2024 strikeout rate was the second-worst of his career.
While his track record and velocity are both intriguing, his command has always been poor and his 2024 season had some notable red flags.
The Blue Jays need pitchers with proven track records at this point, not pitchers who need fixing, the window with this core of players is getting smaller everyday.
2025 is a win at all costs, all hands on deck, type season for the Toronto Blue Jays.
We will have to wait and see who Ross Atkins picks up in the upcoming days and weeks to find out how serious this front office is about improving the rotation and bullpen.
In the meantime I wish Genesis Cabrera all the luck in the world on making the Mets squad in spring training this season he is going to need it.
