Sports fans in general are a persnickety bunch, and Toronto fandom in particular can get can spicy, even on the best of days. Just ask any Leafs fan.
We've seen evidence of that this offseason. The raging hate-on for General Manager Ross Atkins has reached absurd levels, and when he does do something positive, the goalposts are moved further afield.
The most recent example of this was of course the Jeff Hoffman signing.
Atkins was able to lure an All-Star closer north of the 49th and yet Blue Jays fans are still not happy because a) they feel that the Blue Jays are 2nd bananas after Baltimore backed out of the deal and that Hoffman signed with us out of pity and b) they just generally despise Ross Atkins.
We've also seen it with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Yes, the Blue Jays still haven't reached an extension with him, but the two sides did manage to avoid arbitration. While it was the bare minimum, things could be a whole lot messier if an agreement wasn't reached.
We can get so singularly focused that when something good happens, we are still angry and unhappy.
It even occurred earlier in the offseason with the acquisition of Andres Gimenez. While Gimenez might just be the best defensive second baseman in the game today, because he is not a strong hitter, the ignoramus among Jays fans were raging that this was a terrible trade that could actually make the team worse.
Yes, they gave up a strong hitter in Spencer Horwitz, but he wasn't going to get much playing time anyways. Can't hit if you don't play.
There is still four weeks left until spring training starts, plus roughly another month after that before the start of the 2025 season. That is still a lot of time for moves to happen.
Let's all just take a deep breath.
