In a new article for SportsNet, Blue Jays insider, analyst and co-host of At The Letters podcast Ben Nicholson-Smith opines that the Blue Jays still aren't good enough and face an uphill battle to get out of the basement of the AL East.
While the signing of Jeff Hoffman no doubt helps the bullpen and improves run prevention, the Jays are still missing that power bat. Then of course, there is the whole situation with Vladimir Guerrero Jr..
Even the Hoffman signing comes with risk. Performances from relief pitchers are notoriously volatile and it is telling that the Orioles had some concerns about Hoffman's shoulder.
Plus the Blue Jays can, and probably should continue to add to their bullpen.
But it's the hitting that really needs to improve. The Blue Jays had a very middling 101 wRC+ and then traded away one of their most productive hitters in Spencer Horwitz.
While it doesn't solve everything, the Hoffman signing is the biggest commitment ever given to a reliever by the Blue Jays and shows that maybe, finally, they are stepping out of their comfort zone and willing to spend.
Nicholson-Smith, as well as others like Keegan Matheson have opined that the Blue Jays should add another mid-rotation starter. Although this would likely push Yariel Rodriguez to the bullpen, it would make the team better overall.
So, while the Blue Jays have certainly improved, they still have a ways to go if they want to be competitive.
