The Toronto Blue Jays are one step closer to locking up Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Multiple media outlets are reporting on a story first indicated by MLB Insider Hector Gomez, that the Blue Jays are about to make a second offer to the superstar first baseman. The offer is said to be significantly higher and closer to what Guerrero is looking for.
While the exact figure is unknown, $450MM seems to be around what Guerrero wants. In a December interview, he stated that him and the Blue Jays were about $100MM apart in negotiations. This was after the Blue Jays reported offer of roughly $350MM.
Signing Guerrero to a long-term deal would be huge for the Blue Jays and could restore some of the fans faith in Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro. It would also be far and away the biggest deal in franchise history. That record is currently held by George Springer and his six year, $150MM contract.
Vlad and the Blue Jays recently agreed to a $28.5MM deal for 2025, thereby avoiding arbitration. While this was a necessary first step, it was the easiest one.
But perhaps this was Atkins plan all along; gauge the market for someone like Soto, get Vladdy to agree to a salary and then focus on the contract extension.
And while fans rightly remain skeptical that anything of substance will actually come about, it is important to note that Gomez was one of the first journalists to hypothesize about Juan Soto becoming a New York Met.
A person very close to Juan Soto: "I would be very surprised if the #Mets don't sign him in the free agency. The talks are based around the fact that he could become the highest paid player of all time".- Héctor Gmez (@hgomez27) November 6, 2024
