Shi Davidi speaks, says the Blue Jays offseason shouldn't be a surprise
We've heard from Buck Martinez, we've heard from Keegan Matheson. Now Shai Davidi has decided to chime in. The longtime Blue Jays analyst for SportsNet made the remarks in a new written piece for the television network.
He lays bare all the facts.
Given the circumstances, the underwhelming course this Toronto Blue Jays off-season has taken probably shouldn't be a surprise.
As Davidi says, the Blue Jays are rarely anyone's first choice as a destination, especially with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. still unsigned.
And yet, in spite of everything, the Blue Jays have remained disciplined in their approach to free agents, especially when it comes to valuations.
While it may not seem like it, Ross Atkins has remained rational in a market that has become increasingly volatile and requires some degree of irrationality. The Jays obviously have money, but they aren't going to overpay just anybody.
As a result, the Blue Jays have the perception of being the party guest no one wants.
The industry seems to have treated the Blue Jays like the party guest who's a two at 10 p.m. just waiting to become someone's 10 at 2 a.m.
And while they have struck out on free agents so far, and may even lose the Anthony Santander sweepstakes, they have ha success in the trade market, which is an area they can - and should continue to explore.
As Davidi notes though, one upside of not signing any big names this winter is that the Blue Jays will be under the luxury threshold.
The arbitration deadline is Thursday at 1pm EST. Davidi is hopeful that the Blue Jays can reach an agreement with Vladdy without having to go a hearing for the 2nd year in a row, especially since a deal with Vladdy is their best shot at extending that competitive window.
Whatever happens, the Jays will need to find a way out this bind.
