The Toronto Blue Jays might be emerging as the frontrunners for pitcher Max Scherzer

According to MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand, while several teams, including the Mets and Yankees, were present at Scherzer's recent workout, the Blue Jays appear to be the most serious about signing him. As of now, however, it doesn't seem that a formal offer has been extended.
The future Hall of Famer has had difficulty staying healthy since joining the Rangers, making just nine starts last season after his 2023 campaign ended prematurely.
At 40 years old, Scherzer is nearing the end of his illustrious career, but a one-year deal in the range of $15MM-similar to the contracts signed by Justin Verlander and Alex Cobb-is still a possibility.
Scherzer could slot into the 4th spot in the rotation, allowing the Blue Jays to move Yariel Rodriguez to the bullpen, which is where they prefer him to be.
The Yankees and Mets each have five-man rotations, although the Mets are likely to implement a six-man rotation at some point during the season. The Yankees, reportedly moving on from former Blue Jay Marcus Stroman, are looking to add more depth behind fifth starter Clarke Schmidt.
While Scherzer's interest in Toronto is still unclear, one source indicated that the Blue Jays are currently the favourites to land the three-time Cy Young Award winner.
Taking a one-year gamble on Scherzer would further solidify the rotation and add to the team's pitching depth. It would allow the Blue Jays to keep young arms like Jake Bloss, Eric Lauer, Adam Macko, and Adam Kloffenstein in the minors for additional development.
Scherzer turns 41 in July.
