The Blue Jays have failed to land a big name so far this offseason, whether it be a power bat like Anthony Santander or a mid-rotation pitcher such as Jack Flaherty. Part of the reason for this is the the Jays reluctance to go beyond five or six years.
But to quote Bob Dylan, the times they are a-changin'.
It has been reported that both Santander and Flaherty are now open to short-term deals. What exactly this means is unknown, but this often refers to one or two years.
We've seen the Blue Jays do this before. They had fantastic success after taking a chance on a one year deal with Marcus Semien back in 2021. The 2nd baseman had a career year and finished 3rd in MVP voting before cashing in and getting a multimillion dollar payday with Texas.
A one or two year deal could work for the Blue Jays with somebody like Santander. A left field/DH type of player, he could be a transitional stopgap until the next crop of outfielders is ready. Some of them aren't that far away.
The same could also be said if the Blue Jays were to sign a starter like Jack Flaherty or Jose Quintana, although less so. With Chris Bassitt's contract up this year, Kevin Gausman's at the end of 2026, and with Jose Berrios having an opt-out that same year, there is more uncertainty in the rotation.
That being said with players like Jake Bloss and Eric Lauer in the minors, a shorter term contract with a veteran could again act as a bridge to the next crop of youngsters.
At the same time however, the Jays have been more willing to go to three years or more with pitchers, which could give them another veteran presence for a few more years.
