He homered in the Blue Jays victory against the Yankees on Saturday and added another hit in an 8-7 comeback win over the Red Sox.
While no one questions Martinez' power stroke and his ability to hit, his defensive metrics still cause some concern, especially as an infielder.
Yet according to Blue Jays insider Keegan Matheson, that could be a problem for next year.
The Blue Jays beat writer is a big proponent of letting youngster mash his way onto the team, especially since he crushes lefties.
While this would diminish playing time for Will Wagner, who is a good all-around hitter and has positional flexibility, but enters the year without a specific home, more offence is better than less.
It may also push Davis Schneider off the roster.
Martinez could also begin the year in Triple-A and receive a call-up if he starts off hot, something else Matheson is a proponent of.
Martinez has 30 home run potential and could it be to the Blue Jays benefit to have a full-time DH who can occasionally play the field.
If Ernie Clement regresses then Martinez could see more time at third base.
With Martinez, Wagner, and Anthony Santander all on the roster, the Blue Jays could get creative with how they structure their lineup and DH spot.
Wagner could play first if Guerrero needs to rest or the Blue Jays want to give him a partial off day. The Blue Jays could have Wagner at 2nd and Martinez at third, or vice versa.
As Matheson says, let Martinez hit and worry about next year.... next year.
